Mahjong Mafia

Bringing People to the Table, One Tile at a Time

Mahjong Mafia is a modern mahjong club and community based in Austin, TX, blending tradition, play, and cultural pride. What started as a small weekly game night has evolved into a thriving community of nearly 200 members in just one year, bringing together players from diverse backgrounds to connect, build community, and celebrate Asian culture.

I developed the full brand identity and look & feel, creating a bold, playful system that bridges heritage and modern culture. The logo draws from the 8-Bamboo tile, forming two M’s for “Mahjong Mafia.” I created a custom, hand-lettered wordmark and paired it with the typeface, ‘Offbeat’ by artist Lisa Taniguchi.

The designs nod to nostalgic cultural icons like dim sum menus and yutlik calendar pages — reimagined with a contemporary, expressive edge. The result is a bold and nostalgic brand that celebrates culture through community. Mahjong Mafia merges play, design, and pride, showing how tradition can evolve without losing its roots.
